Amsterdam's five-star hotels are as varied as the city itself. Some occupy grand 19th-century landmarks on Dam Square and the Amstel River, while others are bold, design-led newcomers. All combine refined style with a genuine sense of place.
We chose only hotels that pair five-star comfort with real character. Expect grand historic buildings with sweeping staircases and glass-roofed winter gardens, alongside stylish modern hotels with designer interiors. Several have Michelin-starred restaurants, spas and indoor pools.
Our picks are in the heart of the old centre, along the Amstel, by the canals and beside the Oosterpark. Most are a short walk from Dam Square, the Nine Streets or the Rijksmuseum, and the rest are a quick tram ride away. For five-star comfort with a true sense of Amsterdam, these hotels set the standard.

The Wereldmuseum, with collections from around the world, sits along the park, and ARTIS is close by. The Dappermarkt, a lively street market, is a short walk away. A tram stop is two minutes away, with the Rijksmuseum and Museumplein about 15 minutes by tram.

Overlooking Dam Square
The hotel sits on Dam Square, the city's historic heart, opposite the National Monument. Busy shopping streets such as Kalverstraat lead off the square. The Nine Streets, with their independent boutiques and canal-side cafés, are about a six-minute walk away, and the Flower Market is under ten. Trams stop right outside, and Centraal Station is about a 15-minute walk.
From Coffee House to Grand Hotel
Krasnapolsky began in 1856 as a coffee house opened by Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky, a Polish tailor. It grew into one of Amsterdam's best-known hotels. The Wintergarden, with its high glass roof, is still its most impressive space, and Anantara has added warmer, more residential touches.
Rooms, Rooftop Terraces & Suites
Rooms start at 26 square metres and include Nespresso machines, soundproofing, and air conditioning. Premium rooms offer more space, can accommodate up to 4 guests, and some overlook Dam Square directly. Executive rooms on the rooftop have their own private terrace, and the Royal Dam View Suite overlooks the palace.
Dining with a Sense of Occasion
The White Room, dating from 1885, holds a Michelin star. Grand Café Krasnapolsky overlooks Dam Square, and breakfast is served beneath the Wintergarden's glass roof. The Tailor is a stylish evening cocktail bar.
Spa & Fitness
The Anantara Spa has a sauna, steam room, treatment rooms, and relaxation areas that open onto the Summer Garden. The Technogym fitness centre also has a climbing wall.

Between Two Canals in the Old Centre
Few hotels put you this close to Amsterdam's beginnings. The Grand stands between two canals in the city's oldest quarter, where narrow streets lead to Nieuwmarkt, its medieval Waag and busy café terraces. Dam Square is a few minutes away on foot, the Nine Streets are a pleasant walk through the centre, and Rokin metro station is close by. Yet behind its gates, all is surprisingly calm.
Six Centuries of History
Parts of the building date back to a 15th-century convent. It later served as the Admiralty headquarters and, for most of the 20th century, as Amsterdam's City Hall. Princess Beatrix married Prince Claus here in 1966. Original architectural features sit alongside polished interiors with a French touch.
Spacious Rooms & Suites
Rooms start at a generous 30 square metres, with high ceilings and large windows. The interiors blend modern luxury with art and references to the building's history. Larger rooms and suites add canal views and extra space.
Bridges, Oriole & the Courtyard Garden
Bridges is the hotel's main restaurant, and Oriole offers Mediterranean dishes in a more relaxed setting. In warmer months, the secluded courtyard garden is a lovely place to eat or drink.
Spa, Pool & Hammam
Set over two floors, the Sofitel SPA is a peaceful escape in the heart of the old city. The heated indoor pool features a jet stream, plus a Jacuzzi, sauna, and traditional hammam. Treatments range from facials and body scrubs to Ayurvedic rituals, with couples' rooms. A quiet relaxation room completes the experience, and a fitness centre is on hand for a workout.

Prinsengracht, near the Nine Streets & Jordaan
Andaz sits on a quiet stretch of the Prinsengracht, between the Nine Streets and Leidseplein. The Nine Streets are about a two-minute walk. The Jordaan, with its narrow lanes, galleries, and brown cafés, is a short stroll north, and Museumplein is about a 20-minute walk. Trams from nearby Elandsgracht and Leidsestraat connect you with the rest of the city.
Playful Dutch Design
Dutch designer Marcel Wanders created every space in the hotel. His design draws on the building's past as a library and on Amsterdam's history. Delft-blue patterns, giant bell-shaped chandeliers and witty details appear at every turn, and nothing feels ordinary.
Rooms with Canal or Garden Views
Rooms start at 26 square metres and overlook the canal, garden, or atrium. Canal-view rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows framing the Prinsengracht. Every room has a seating area and a minibar with complimentary drinks and snacks, and some have a painted Delft-style washbasin. The Prinsengracht Suite has a large private terrace over the canal.
Renvy, Prins & Aap and the Garden Room
Renvy, from Michelin-starred chef Randy Karman, serves seasonal Dutch-inspired dinners from Wednesday to Saturday. Prins & Aap is a canal-side cocktail bar and restaurant with a daily Jenever Hour, free for hotel guests. The Garden Room serves breakfast, and a vintage saloon boat outside offers private dining cruises.
Essence Spa, Sauna & 24-Hour Gym
After a day of museums and canal walks, Essence Spa is a relaxing place to unwind. It has a sauna, steam room, and treatment rooms offering massages and facials, plus a relaxation lounge. A fitness centre completes the line-up.

The Southern Edge of De Pijp
Beside the Noorder Amstelkanaal, on De Pijp's quieter southern edge, the Okura enjoys a calmer pace than the busy streets to the north. The Albert Cuyp Market and the neighbourhood's lively cafés and restaurants are about ten minutes' walk away, and Brouwerij Troost, a popular local brewery, is just five. Trams stop nearby, De Pijp metro station is around ten minutes on foot, and Museumplein is a taxi ride of around ten minutes
Japanese Hospitality in Amsterdam
Okura brings Japanese hospitality to Amsterdam with precision. The public spaces are calm and minimalist, and the service is polished and attentive. A Japanese garden adds to the sense of calm, and despite the hotel's size, it never feels impersonal.
Spacious Rooms with City Views
Room sizes are generous for Amsterdam, starting at 28 square metres. Every room has an Eastborn bed, a separate bathtub and rain shower, a large desk and a Nespresso machine. The upper floors overlook the city skyline. Executive rooms and suites include access to the Executive Lounge, with drinks and light snacks before dinner.
Some of Amsterdam's Best Hotel Dining
Ciel Bleu, on the 23rd floor, holds two Michelin stars and offers panoramic city views. Yamazato serves kaiseki cuisine and was the first traditional Japanese restaurant in Europe to earn a Michelin star. Sazanka offers teppanyaki cooked at your table, and Serre is a more relaxed option. The Twenty Third Bar is the place for a sunset cocktail high above Amsterdam.
Nagomi Spa, Pool & Fitness
Nagomi draws on Japanese wellness traditions. The indoor pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room are included in every stay. Treatments range from massages and facials to manicures and pedicures, and the gym offers personal trainers and fitness classes.

On the Amstel in the Historic Centre
In a prime spot on the Amstel, Tivoli Doelen sits in the heart of the historic centre. The Flower Market, with its floating stalls of tulips and bulbs, is a few minutes away. Rembrandtplein, lively with cafés and bars, is nearby. Dam Square and the Nine Streets are an easy walk, and Rokin metro station is just 350 metres from the hotel.
A Building with Rembrandt History
The hotel stands on the site of the Kloveniersdoelen, the militia headquarters for which Rembrandt painted The Night Watch. The painting hung here for more than 70 years before moving to the Rijksmuseum. The wall where it hung is now part of the Rembrandt Suite.
Classic Rooms & Suites with Canal Views
Rooms combine historic character with marble bathrooms and Natura Bissé toiletries. Some have balconies, and the Superior and Deluxe room categories feature canal views. The Rembrandt Suite has its own balcony with canal views, making it a fine choice for a special occasion.
Restaurant & Bar
The restaurant's menu draws inspiration from Rembrandt's palette and uses locally sourced ingredients. After dinner, the bar is a comfortable spot for a drink with views of the water.

Between Centraal Station & Dam Square
Kimpton De Witt is on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, one of the main streets into the historic centre. Centraal Station is a five-minute walk away, and Dam Square and the Royal Palace are a short walk. To the west lie the Nine Streets and the Jordaan, two of the city's most attractive neighbourhoods for shopping, cafés and canal-side strolls.
Playful Dutch Design
The hotel opened in 2017 as the first Kimpton outside the United States. Designer Jacu Strauss kept the original beamed ceilings of the two 17th-century buildings. He then added bold art, humour and plenty of references to Dutch culture.
Colourful Rooms & Family Options
Most rooms are in the modern wing, decorated in blues and greens inspired by Delft tiles, with playful touches such as bird-shaped reading lamps. Premium rooms include a triple-occupancy category, and a Premium room with two double beds can accommodate families of four. The penthouse has its own rooftop terrace, spiral staircase and fireplace.
Super Lyan & Celia
Super Lyan is the cocktail bar created by acclaimed bartender Ryan Chetiyawardana, known as Mr Lyan. It sits in a third historic townhouse and has been ranked among Europe's best bars. Upstairs, Celia serves modern American cooking with a Californian influence.

On the Banks of the Amstel
Grand hotels rarely enjoy such a serene setting. The Amstel faces the river from Professor Tulpplein, a quiet square on the east bank named after Nicolaes Tulp, the surgeon immortalised in Rembrandt's The Anatomy Lesson. A walk along the water leads to the Skinny Bridge and the canal belt; De Pijp is about 15 minutes on foot, and Weesperplein metro station is five minutes away.
A Classic European Grand Hotel
Chandeliers, sweeping staircases, high ceilings and elegant drawing rooms give the hotel an old-world atmosphere. Arriving at the grand riverside façade is a memorable start to any stay. The service is warm and friendly, so it never feels formal.
Classic Rooms with River Views
Rooms start at 25 square metres and feature traditional furnishings, including Dutch period furniture, patterned fabrics, and Delft details. Book river-view rooms. Higher categories offer much more space and wide views over the Amstel.
Dining by the Water
The Amstel Restaurant serves French classics alongside one of the city's most extensive wine lists. Enjoy its river-view terrace in warmer weather. The Amstel Lounge serves afternoon tea, a long-standing hotel tradition.
Pool with River Views, Spa & Fitness
The Health Club is one of the hotel's great pleasures. The heated indoor pool looks straight out over the Amstel, so you can swim while the boats pass on the river outside. Afterwards, unwind in the Jacuzzi, sauna or steam room. You can book massages and beauty treatments, and the gym has personal trainers on hand.

On the Amstel, beside De Pijp
Pestana stands on the Amsteldijk, along the Amstel. Just behind it is De Pijp, one of Amsterdam's most popular neighbourhoods. Here, the Albert Cuyp Market sells everything from Dutch cheese to fresh stroopwafels, and the side streets are full of cafés, bars and restaurants. The Lutmastraat tram stop is about seven minutes away, with direct trams to Centraal Station.
A Former Town Hall & Archive
The hotel occupies the former Town Hall and Archive of the old Amstel municipality, a pair of neo-Renaissance buildings now protected as a national monument. Modern wings have been added alongside. The lobby, with its high ceilings and arches, makes a fine first impression.
Rooms, Studios & River Views
Rooms are contemporary and calm, in soft, neutral tones, with a pillow menu and 24-hour room service. River-view rooms are worth the upgrade, and some have a bathtub. Studios add a kitchenette, useful for families and longer stays. Book a Triple Studio for larger travel groups.
Relaxed All-Day Dining
Cotidiano Brunch Club serves relaxed, brunch-style dishes all day, plus breakfast, dinner, and an evening bar.
Spa & Indoor Pool
The spa is one of the hotel's best features. The heated indoor pool is joined by two saunas and a hammam, plus a relaxation area for quiet time afterwards. You can book massages, facials, and body treatments, and use the fully equipped fitness centre.
