About Dubai

Dubai is a city built on ambition, where the world's tallest building rises from the desert, islands stretch out into the sea, and old trading souks still thrive beside the Creek. With sunshine almost year-round, golden beaches, and world-class dining and shopping on a grand scale, it's one of the world's great holiday cities, and every neighbourhood has its own appeal. Where you stay makes a real difference. Dubai stretches far along the coast, so choosing a base near the Metro, or right on the beach if that's your priority, will make your trip much easier.

Discover Dubai's neighbourhoods

Dubai is a city of contrasts. In a single day, you can wander through a centuries-old souk, swim off a palm-shaped island and dine beneath the world's tallest building. Here's where each neighbourhood shines, and which one suits your trip.

Dubai Skyline and Burj Khalifa

Downtown Dubai

“Spectacular, glamorous and endlessly impressive — Dubai at its most iconic.”

If it's your first time in Dubai, I'd tell you to stay here. Downtown is the Dubai everyone imagines, with the Burj Khalifa soaring overhead, the Dubai Fountain dancing at its feet and Dubai Mall, home to an aquarium and an ice rink, right beside them.

Evenings are the highlight. Watch the fountain shows from a waterside terrace at Souk Al Bahar, catch a performance at Dubai Opera or dine with the tower lit up above you. The Metro links Downtown to the Marina and the airport, and Business Bay, just across the canal, offers a calmer stay with equally impressive skyline views.

Pro tipA Burj Khalifa view is worth the splurge. Seeing the tower light up at night from your own window never gets old.

Palm Jumeirah

“Luxurious, sun-soaked and effortlessly indulgent — Dubai's island escape.”

Only in Dubai could you stay on an island shaped like a palm tree. Palm Jumeirah is the city's grand statement, home to many of its most famous resorts, from Atlantis and its waterpark to intimate beachfront retreats with views back to the Marina skyline.

It feels like a destination in its own right. Days revolve around private beaches, pools, spas and celebrated restaurants, and many guests barely leave. When you do, the Palm Monorail runs along the trunk; Dubai Marina is about 20 minutes by car, and Downtown is about half an hour. It's the ultimate Dubai beach holiday, with the city still close at hand.

Pro tipThe outer crescent feels the most secluded and resort-like, while the trunk puts you closer to the malls, the Monorail and the city.

Dubai Marina

“Sleek, buzzing and beautifully lit — Dubai's waterfront playground.”

Dubai Marina feels alive from the moment you arrive. Glittering towers rise on both sides of a long, man-made canal, and the Marina Walk promenade below is lined with cafés, restaurants and bars, with superyachts moored alongside.

It's best in the evening, when restaurants fill up, dhow dinner cruises glide past, and the skyline lights up around you. The beach at JBR is a short walk away, Dubai Marina Mall is on the waterfront, and the Metro and tram make it easy to reach the Palm, Downtown and beyond. Beach life, city energy and Dubai's famous skyline all come together here.

Pro tipChoose a room overlooking the Marina rather than facing inland. The view of the yachts and the lit-up towers at night is a big part of the experience.

Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR)

“Sunny, social and easy-going — beach life in the heart of the city.”

If your idea of a Dubai holiday is beach days and lively evenings, Jumeirah Beach Residence, better known as JBR, is hard to beat. A long stretch of soft sand runs along its length, backed by The Walk, a buzzing promenade of cafés, restaurants and shops.

What I love about JBR is how easy everything feels. The beach, dining and entertainment are all within a few minutes' walk, which is rare in Dubai. Ain Dubai rises on Bluewaters Island just offshore, Dubai Marina is right next door, and the tram connects you to the Metro. It's a relaxed beach holiday, without ever feeling cut off from the city.

Pro tipHotels near The Walk offer the easiest access to the beach, restaurants, and evening entertainment.

Kite beach in Jumeirah

Jumeirah

“Relaxed, upscale and sun-kissed — Dubai's original beach neighbourhood.”

Long before the Palm and the Marina, Jumeirah was Dubai's original beach neighbourhood, and it's still one of my favourite places to stay. Its long coastline is lined with low-rise villas, stylish cafés, and soft public beaches, including Kite Beach and J1 Beach (formerly La Mer).

It feels calmer, greener and more local than the city's high-rise districts. At its southern end, the Burj Al Arab rises beside Madinat Jumeirah, with its winding waterways, souk and Wild Wadi Waterpark, while City Walk's open-air shops and restaurants sit just inland. Downtown is a short drive away, so you get the beach without losing the city.

Pro tipKite Beach is one of Dubai's best spots for an early morning walk or swim, followed by breakfast at a beachfront café.

Old Dubai Deira

Deira

“Authentic, bustling and full of character — the Dubai that came before the skyline.”

Long before the skyscrapers and resorts, Deira was the beating heart of Dubai's trade, and it still has the energy of a busy port. Here you'll find the famous Gold Souk and the Spice Souk, with wooden dhows loading cargo along the Creek as they have for generations.

It's busier and far more local than the Dubai of the brochures, with markets, multicultural street food and some of the city's best-value hotels. It's also wonderfully practical. Dubai International Airport is a short drive away, the Metro links you to Downtown, and City Centre Deira Mall is close at hand. For a short stopover or a more authentic stay, it's an excellent choice.

Pro tipTake an abra across the Creek to Al Fahidi and explore both sides of old Dubai in a single afternoon.

Mall of Emirates Dubai Al Barsha

Al Barsha

“Practical, connected and surprisingly fun — snow slopes in the desert.”

Al Barsha may not top Dubai's most glamorous lists, but it's one of the city's smartest places to stay. It centres on Mall of the Emirates, home to Ski Dubai, where you can ski, toboggan and meet penguins on real snow while it's sunny outside.

Its biggest strength is its excellent connectivity. The Metro runs straight to Downtown and Dubai Marina, while Jumeirah and the Palm beaches are only a short taxi ride away. Hotels here offer excellent value, and the area is popular with families and business travellers alike. It's an ideal base if you want convenience without the premium price.

Pro tipStay close to Mall of the Emirates Metro station for the easiest access to the rest of Dubai.

Dubai Desert resort with private pool

Desert Resorts

“Peaceful, golden and unforgettable — Dubai's other world.”

Beyond the skyline and the beaches lies one of Dubai's most memorable stays. In the desert, skyscrapers give way to rolling golden dunes, camel trails and some of the most spectacular sunsets you'll ever see, yet you're only around 45 minutes from Downtown.

Days here run at a different pace. You might ride a camel at dusk, try sandboarding or a dune drive, unwind in the spa, then dine under a sky full of stars. Many resorts offer private pool villas overlooking the sand. It's a reminder that, beyond all the glamour, Dubai's story began in the desert.

Pro tipSplit your stay between the city and the desert. Two or three nights in the dunes give you two very different sides of Dubai.
