About Paris

Paris needs little introduction, yet it never stops surprising. Grand boulevards give way to medieval lanes, and world-famous museums sit beside neighbourhood markets. Every pavement terrace feels like the best seat in the city. However you spend your days, Paris is best savoured slowly, one café, gallery and boulevard at a time. In Paris, your address matters more than you might think. The city's 20 arrondissements spiral out from the centre like a snail shell. Staying in one of the central, lower-numbered ones keeps the main sights within walking distance or a short Metro ride.

Louvre in Paris

Louvre (1st)

“Regal, central and effortlessly grand — Paris at its most majestic.”

If you want to be in the very centre of Paris, this is it. The 1st arrondissement sits on the Right Bank, beside the Seine. The Louvre, the Tuileries Garden and the Palais Royal are right on your doorstep. For a first visit, it's hard to find a more convenient base.

Almost everything is walkable from here. Saint-Germain is 15 minutes across the Pont des Arts, Le Marais is about 25 minutes, and Notre-Dame is about 20 minutes along the river. A 15-minute walk through the Tuileries brings you to Place de la Concorde and the foot of the Champs-Élysées. The one trade-off is atmosphere. Evenings can feel quieter here, as fewer Parisians live in the area.

Pro tipHotels around the Palais Royal feel calmer and more elegant than those right beside the Louvre or Châtelet, yet you're still only minutes from everything.

A charming street in Le Marais in Paris

Le Marais (3rd & 4th)

“Charming, creative and full of life — old Paris with a modern pulse.”

Le Marais is where I'd send anyone who wants Paris's history and modern buzz in one place. It lies on the Right Bank, just east of the centre. Its medieval streets are lined with grand 17th-century mansions, galleries and some of the city's best independent boutiques.

Place des Vosges, the Picasso Museum and the falafel shops of Rue des Rosiers are all here. Notre-Dame is about a 15-minute walk away, and the Louvre is about 25 minutes away. Many shops open on Sundays, which is rare in Paris. It's lively, especially at weekends. If the Eiffel Tower is your priority, though, allow around 40 minutes by Metro.

Pro tipThe Haut-Marais to the north feels trendier, with concept stores and buzzy cafés, while the streets closer to the Seine feel quieter and more classic.

Charming street in Saint-Germain Des Pres in Paris

Saint-Germain-des-Prés (6th)

“Literary, stylish and quintessentially Parisian — the Left Bank at its most elegant.”

If I could choose only one neighbourhood in Paris, it would be Saint-Germain-des-Prés. It sits on the Left Bank, directly across the Seine from the Louvre. This is classic Paris, with café terraces, art galleries, bookshops and elegant boutiques at every turn.

Its location is superb. The Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay are both 10–15 minutes away, across the Pont des Arts. Notre-Dame is about fifteen minutes on foot, and the Luxembourg Gardens are just a few minutes away. Café de Flore and Les Deux Magots still fill their terraces every day. The only drawback is price. Hotels here are among the city's most sought-after.

Pro tipStay on a quieter side street just off Boulevard Saint-Germain. You'll get a calmer, more residential feel, yet still be moments from the cafés.

Bustling street in Latin Quarter in Paris

Latin Quarter (5th)

“Lively, scholarly and wonderfully atmospheric — the Left Bank's oldest quarter.”

The Latin Quarter is the best choice for travellers who want a central Left Bank location without Saint-Germain prices. It sits just across the river from Notre-Dame and gets its name from the Latin once spoken by Sorbonne students. It's lively, historic and full of character.

You can walk to Notre-Dame in around ten minutes and to Saint-Germain in about fifteen. The Panthéon, Shakespeare and Company, and the market street of Rue Mouffetard are all nearby. The RER B also runs straight to Charles de Gaulle Airport, which makes arrivals easy. The area around Boulevard Saint-Michel can feel busy, but the streets up the hill are much quieter.

Pro tipThe streets near the Panthéon and the Luxembourg Gardens feel quieter and more elegant than the busy area around Boulevard Saint-Michel.

Eiffel Tower neighbourhood in Paris

Eiffel Tower (7th)

“Elegant, romantic and unmistakably Parisian — the city's most famous view.”

Stay in the 7th arrondissement if you dream of seeing the Eiffel Tower from your window. On the Left Bank, west of the centre, it's one of Paris's most elegant and peaceful parts. Wide avenues, grand Haussmann buildings and the lawns of the Champ de Mars give it a refined, residential feel.

Les Invalides, the Rodin Museum, and the market street of Rue Cler are all nearby. The Musée d'Orsay is around 15 minutes away on the RER C, and the Louvre is around 30 minutes by Metro. Evenings here are peaceful rather than lively, which is exactly why couples and families love it.

Pro tipFor the classic postcard view, cross the river to Trocadéro at sunrise, before the crowds arrive. If your budget allows, book a room with a tower view.

 Champs-Elysées shopping street in Paris

Champs-Élysées (8th)

“Glamorous, grand and always buzzing — Paris on its most famous avenue.”

The Champs-Élysées is Paris at its grandest and most famous. The avenue runs across the Right Bank, west of the centre, from Place de la Concorde up to the Arc de Triomphe. Flagship stores, cinemas, and pavement cafés line it, and it's busy day and night.

Getting around is easy. Metro line 1 runs beneath the avenue, reaching the Louvre in around 13 minutes and Le Marais in 25 to 30. The Grand Palais sits at its lower end, and the Eiffel Tower is around a twenty-five-minute walk across the river. It's more about glamour than local charm, but for shopping and first-time sightseeing, few bases are more convenient.

Pro tipClimb to the Arc de Triomphe rooftop at sunset. The view straight down the Champs-Élysées is one of the best in Paris.

Golden Triangle neighbourhood in Paris

Golden Triangle (8th)

“Opulent, exclusive and impeccably chic — Paris at its most luxurious.”

The Golden Triangle is Paris's most exclusive address. It's formed by the Champs-Élysées, Avenue George V and Avenue Montaigne, just north of the Seine. This is the world of haute couture and legendary palace hotels, and it's where I'd look for a special occasion.

Despite its glamour, the streets feel calm and refined. The Eiffel Tower is about a 20-minute walk away, across the Pont de l'Alma, and the Champs-Élysées is on your doorstep. The Louvre is around 15 minutes away on Metro line 1. Evenings here are elegant rather than lively, and dining comes at a price. For a milestone celebration or a truly luxurious stay, choose this address.

Pro tipTake an evening cruise on the Seine from Pont de l'Alma, just a short walk away. Paris is at its most romantic from the water after dark.

Place de l'Opera in Avenue de l'Opéra in Paris

Opéra (2nd & 9th)

“Elegant, busy and beautifully central — Haussmann's Paris in all its glory.”

Opéra is one of Paris's most practical places to stay, and one of its grandest. It lies on the Right Bank, just north of the Louvre, around the magnificent Palais Garnier opera house. Wide Haussmann boulevards and the great department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, give it a polished, busy feel.

It's a superb base for getting around. The Louvre is about a 20-minute walk away, and several Metro lines and the RER meet here. The Roissybus to Charles de Gaulle Airport leaves from beside the opera house. It trades village charm for convenience, and on a first trip focused on sightseeing and shopping, that's a trade worth making.

Pro tipStay on the quieter streets just behind Boulevard Haussmann. You'll be close to the shops and the Metro, without the busiest crowds.

Charming street in Montmarte Paris

Montmartre (18th)

“Bohemian, romantic and village-like — Paris on the hill.”

Montmartre is Paris's most romantic neighbourhood and one of the best places to stay. It sits on a hill in the city's north, away from the central sights. With its cobbled lanes, artists' squares and the white domes of the Sacré-Cœur, it feels like a village.

Picasso, Renoir and Van Gogh once lived here, and the views over Paris are superb. The trade-off is distance. The Louvre is around 30 minutes away by Metro and the Opéra about 25, and the hills and steps can be tiring. It's a wonderful choice for couples and repeat visitors, or for anyone happy to trade a little convenience for a lot of atmosphere.

Pro tipStay on the quieter streets behind the Sacré-Cœur rather than around Place du Tertre, and explore early in the morning before the crowds arrive.
